UCDon Fine Art & Craft alumni shine in inspiring exhibition

Posted: 14 April 2025

Launched on International Women’s Day 2025, the Fox Gallery in Mexborough is hosting an extraordinary exhibition that celebrates the artistic achievements of eight remarkable female alumni from University Campus Doncaster’s BA (Hons) Fine Art & Craft degree programme, alongside two current lecturers. This special showcase not only highlights their individual artistic journeys but also underscores the transformative power of creativity and education within the local community.

The ‘Alumni of University Campus Doncaster’ exhibition brings together graduates spanning more than a decade of the degree’s history, from the Church View, High Melton, and new city centre Hub campuses between 2011 and 2024. The featured artists—Andrea Sutton, Alice Farrington, Becky McKinlay, Emma Sumner, Katrine Barber, Laura Lee, Madeline Pick, Marie Lindley, Paula Elward, and Sapphire Shrives—each present a unique artistic voice, reflecting their personal growth during their time at UCDon and their continued creative evolution beyond graduation.

A journey of growth and mentorship

Throughout their academic careers, graduates not only benefited from the expert guidance and mentorship provided by UCDon’s dedicated faculty but also thrived within Doncaster’s growing and supportive creative network. This environment enabled them to refine their skills, push creative boundaries, and connect with a community of like-minded artists. From traditional painting and sculpture to innovative contemporary mediums, the exhibition showcases an eclectic range of works, offering a glimpse into the diverse artistic practices nurtured within both the programme and the wider Doncaster arts scene.

Andrea Sutton, lead of the BA (Hons) Fine Art & Craft degree, reflected on the significance of the exhibition: “Since 2016, I’ve had the joy of leading the Fine Art and Crafts degree at Doncaster, working with a fantastic team to support our students as they explore their creative paths. We’ve watched them grow, not only earning their degrees but developing a deep passion for their individual art practices. Many have gone on to become teachers, technicians, commercial artists, craftspeople, and community artists—sharing their talents and inspiring others. This exhibition celebrates their journeys of transformation and change.”

Fostering creativity and community

Since opening in 2022, the Fox Gallery is rapidly establishing itself as a vibrant cultural hub, dedicated to supporting and promoting local artists and their unique talents. With a mission to provide a platform for artists to showcase their work and connect with art enthusiasts, the gallery plays a pivotal role in nurturing the creative community. This latest exhibition not only highlights the strength and success of the local arts scene but also reaffirms the shared commitment of both the Fox Gallery and UCDon to empowering women through education, creative expression, and meaningful connections.

The exhibition’s launch event saw an enthusiastic turnout, demonstrating the impact and appeal of the talented women featured. Their work has attracted visitors from across the borough and beyond, making it a proud moment for both the gallery and the artists.

“The ten ladies are an inspiration and a fantastic example of women’s art” said Helen Watson, Creative Director of the FOX Gallery. “Who better to represent the FOX Gallery during International Women’s Day! Collectively, we can all forge a positive change, through open mindsets and celebrate women’s achievements.”

Helen added “I feel very lucky that my journey and career have led to me being able to give back to the community through Art and Culture. With a background in Film, TV and Advertising, I moved back to Doncaster permanently in 2021. Since opening FOX Gallery in September 2022, I have had the pleasure of hosting bimonthly exhibitions throughout out the 2 years. A particular favourite featured Graham Firth and Jeremy Leigh both of whom taught me whilst at Church View, Doncaster’s former Art College before studying a degree in Fine Art Sculpture, and then pursing my passion for photography in London.”

A Lasting Impact

While the exhibition runs until Friday 26th April 2025, its influence will extend far beyond its closing date, serving as a powerful reminder that with the right education, dedication, and perseverance, women can lead, inspire, and reshape the future of the art world.

In addition to exhibition, the Gallery continues to host open days, workshops, and family-friendly activities for the public within the Mexborough Business Centre and community hub space, here visitors are invited to explore, reflect, and engage with the artworks and themes on display.
