From Doncaster to Delhi: Students transform lives through volunteering

Posted: 5 March 2025

Students and staff from University Campus Doncaster (UCDon) and University Campus North Lincolnshire (UCNL) arrived in vibrant India, eager to embark on an unforgettable 8-day adventure with the Volunteering Solutions Street Children Project. From the moment they touched down, they dove into meaningful volunteer work including by helping renovating a school, making a genuine difference in the lives of children from Delhi’s inner-city slums.

Our student volunteers embraced every opportunity to bring positivity and hope, whether by crafting masks, painting, singing, or dancing. The days were filled with a whirlwind of emotions—joyful tears, laughter, and countless heartwarming moments that left a lasting impact on both the volunteers and the children.

Each student created a legacy, not only through their hard work and dedication but also by connecting deeply with the locals and immersing themselves in India’s vibrant culture.

Gillian Reid, Director School of Health, Education, Wellbeing and Sport, and organiser of the volunteering residential said; “The residential to India immersed students in the vibrant culture and colours of this incredible country, offering an unparalleled experience that opened their eyes to a world vastly different from what they knew. For some, this was their first time traveling abroad, or they had only visited Europe, making it a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to engage with street children in the slum, who, despite having so little, radiated joy and happiness. Through this, students developed invaluable communication skills, resilience, and teamwork, while the experience transformed their perspective on both India and humanity, leaving a life-changing lasting impact on every student.”

The journey didn’t end with volunteering – our students also explored India’s rich history and culture, visiting breathtaking landmarks, starting with the awe-inspiring Akshardam Temple, where they admired its intricate design and spiritual atmosphere. The adventure continued in Jaipur, the Pink City, where they explored the Kings Palace, enjoyed an outdoor buffet, and even joined in vibrant folk dances. The final days were filled with unforgettable sights, including a photo stop at the iconic Hawa Mahal and a fun jeep ride up to Amber Fort for panoramic views. They also visited the Water Palace and Monkey Temple, adding a sense of adventure to their cultural exploration. The trip culminated in Agra, where they eagerly awaited the sunrise at the world-famous Taj Mahal.

As their time in India came to a close, our students took home more than just memories. They left behind a piece of their hearts in every project, every moment, and every connection they made with the beautiful people of India. It was an experience that stayed with them forever – filled with purpose, joy, and wonder.

Laura Gibb, a final-year Criminal Justice student, reflected on the trip: “Wow, what an experience! Such an eye-opener and a real culture shock. I’m honestly in awe of the kids and their families in the slums—they have so little but make the most of it in the most incredible way. This was such an amazing opportunity, and I’m forever grateful for it.”
